Make the Most of Google

If Google www.google.com is one of your top choices in search engines, then here are some useful and some amazing things that this search engine can do that you may not know.

Narrow your search: Google ignores common words like “how”, “where”, “I”. If you want to force Google to include a common word, put a plus sign in front of that word. (+how) Another way to force Google to search for all your words is to put quotation marks around a phrase. (“how things work”) If you are looking for information about the country of China, but not china dishes, use a minus sign in front of the word you want to exclude. For example, China –dish. In order for Google to search for one word or another, type the word OR in uppercase between the two words. For example, reading OR literature. Use the tilde sign (~) in front of a word to include synonyms of that word in the search.

Calculations: If you want to use the Google as a calculator, simply type in the mathematical expression you want it to solve in the search box. For example, type 55+168 in the search box, press enter (or return) and you will see 55 + 168 = 223. This calculator can do very simple to very complex mathematical expressions, it understands units like km for kilometer and operators like square root (sqrt). For complete instructions and lists of operators, go to www.google.com/help/calculator.html.

Definitions: To have Google define a word for you, simply type the word definition followed by the word you want defined and click search. (definition infinity will give you eternity: time without end)

Addresses: To find a person’s address and phone number, put their name in quotation marks, then type the city and state. (I find this a little too “big brother.” So, to have your personal information
